Montreat Youth Conference
This past year 25 adults and 29 youth boarded one charter bus and four twelve passenger vans and headed out to Montreat, North Carolina. After an eleven hour journey the group set up in one of the three houses that First Presbyterian Church rents for the week. Sunday is the day of rest for the Florida Montreators and is spent sliding down slippery rock, exploring local attractions or the Montreat Campas.
After a day of fellowship with our church family Sunday night, we attended our first worship service which begins the conference. One in Christ: Visions of Unity is the theme of the 2011 Montreat Conference on Worship and Music. Christ’s prayer for unity in the Gospel of John is central to the mission of the church: to be one, that the world might believe and know love. (John 17: 20-23)
Monday morning began class in choir, handbells, art, bible study and a daily worship service, all centered around the theme of the conference. Each day we are blessed to be able to gather together as a group for lunch and dinner prepared by master chef Carol Israel and her crew. After dinner there are evening activities such as a talent show, organ recital and a hymn festival which we all attend together. The conference concludes on Friday evening with a final concert featuring each of the different choirs. On Saturday morning we depart for Gainesville returning home in the late afternoon.
